200 km / h, who is more?
For some cars, 200 km / h is the limit, others will fly by it in passing and will not even notice. Let’s see together how modern cars are adapted to travel at a speed of 200 km / h. Is it convenient to fly faster than the Swift in the modern car and what possible inconvenience motorists waiting at the same time.
Previously, everything was different. Not so long ago, accelerate to a speed of 200 km / h – it was like breaking the sound barrier! Few cars have succeeded. And who still was lucky to get a similar car, did not feel a special comfort, know, watch the behavior of the car on the road, and then what good you will fly away from it. Hmm, in the 90’s, I had to be nervous very seriously, sweaty hands on the steering wheel, a focused look, a sense of danger. Now also? Or has everything changed? Let’s deal with it.
The testing was carried out by a team of the German auto magazine AutoBild.
200 km / h is not the limit. Borders are overcome.
Today everything is different. At least from a technical point of view. At present, new generation cars, at least from Europe and America, with a capacity of more than 140 hp. and with the correct aerodynamics (sedans, convertibles, coupe, station wagons) are able to move this magic figure. Several tens of seconds of intense acceleration, and now the speedometer needle lies at 200 km / h. Yes there, even a small hatch Opel Corsa OPS today can fly 230 km / h. Moreover, even buses like VW T6 2.0 TDI on the passport have a maximum of more than 203 km / h, and the noise of howling wind outside the window will not bother.
But all these indicators remain on paper. In the sense that many cars are capable of overcoming the magic barrier at the flight of forces, but what’s next? Will they be able to drive in this mode for a long time without driving their passengers crazy? After all, physics can not be changed, there are aerodynamic limitations. The resistance of the air increases at times, after all, the physiology of man is not always able to withstand the race, if the car does not have sufficient or excellent controllability. Factors affecting comfort are numerous. This, as we have already said, and air resistance and the car’s braking system, the driving stability, the responsiveness of the driver …
Do not forget that the car flying at a speed of 200 km / h for 1 second overcomes 55 m / s. This is not a joke!
And so, the alignment of forces is clear. Hence the conclusion is that not every driver in a particular car will cope with the task.
In this story we are interested in the theme of what happens to cars at a speed of 200 km / h. How much can modern technology withstand this speed? How does the driver feel at this moment? And more importantly, how much fuel will be burned during such arrivals?
Ten cars are participating in the testing, from the second-hand Mercedes-Benz model C 180 with a run of 420 thousand km, to the supersport-580 strong Porsche 911 Turbo S. All of them passed measurements on the level of noise in the cabin, fuel consumption and braking from the speed.
Levels of measurements were different. For the old Mercedes, some indulgences were made in the exercise “braking”, for the powerful American pickup Dodge Ram, the maximum speed threshold was reduced to 195 km / h (for safety reasons). The Mercedes-Benz V-Class encountered difficulties in overclocking up to 200 km / h on the test 2.6 km range. The main thing is that the discrepancy in the performance of different cars was within the margin of error, so we can talk about the objectivity of the competition.
Additional measurement values: ten candidates should at least prove the possibility of their acceleration under different conditions. Accuracy of the speedometer was determined using GPS technology, also an important role in the study played engine speed at a given speed. In addition to the dynamics from 0 to 200 km / h, the acceleration time from 130 to 200 km / h was measured. Subjectively, the noise and straightness of the motion were evaluated.
In tests at speeds participated:
Porsche 911 Turbo
Lightweight, compact, manoeuvrable. Abarth Spider is designed to be fast and convenient to operate at high speeds.
Yes, the capacity to overcome the 200 km / h limit is enough. But at speed there are unforeseen inconveniences.
Noise insulation in Spider Abarth is made of bad hands. Serious howls of the wind and noise of tires can be heard. Add to this the sound of an engine running at a higher engine speed (the smaller of the evils) and get 86 dB. It’s a lot. Approximately comparable to a loud scream or the work of a motorcycle with a silencer.
Despite the lightweight body, Abarth burns fuel at a rate of 200 km / h – 17.7 l / 100 km . The indicator is not transcendental, but not small.
On the sixth gear, the crankshaft of the 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine rotates at a speed of about 5.100 rpm . Subjectively, it seems that the engine is very difficult to withstand such a tempo of driving, and 200 km / h on the speedometer is the actual 193 km / h on GPS.
Double front window panes (laminated glass is available for an extra fee of 150 euros), allow to reduce the noise level at speed. Four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI engine under the hood of the Audi Q5, well insulated and makes its way into the cabin with a small soundtrack. Even at 200 km / h problems with annoying sounds on this crossover was not, including aerodynamic.
Instead of 194 km / h on the satellite, the scale of the speedometer shows 200 km / h.
Cons: at high speed, the steering column and the gas pedal vibrate, but here it is still felt that the speed has passed beyond the cruising speed.
17.1 liters , this is the expense of Q5. Is this a lot or a little? For the crossover, the average is closer to a minimum. In general, not bad.
What is 200 km / h for the BMW 5-Series? Yes, nothing special! The bi-turbo motor accelerates the M550i two-ton sedan in less than 15 seconds to the selected measurement speed.
When BMW flies past you on the left lane in the eighth gear, you know, it spends 16.9 liters of high-octane gasoline. A speedometer, including the digital dial, lies at 6 km / h.
Excellent and the indices for the noise in the cabin. Minimal annoying aerodynamic noise (main window do not forget to close), almost no roar of tires.
The only “but” steering could possibly be more responsive at speeds.
A big and terrible sink miles on the highway.
This big guy accelerates to 195 km / h noisily, but it seems easy. Why not up to 200? Of course, with a powerful big engine it will not be difficult for him to cross the line, but in Germany this is prohibited by law. Therefore, the electronic limit is set at a speed of 195 km / h.
The utility room is unexpectedly quiet. The eight-speed gearbox does its job well, not allowing the engine to go to high speed.
The speedometer is a very honest indicator. Only 2 km / h of error.
But the fuel consumption … The good old American likes to eat- 35 liters per 100 kilometers !
Lexus IS 300h is a small, beautiful Japanese premium classics.
The speedometer grafts at 8 km / h at a speed of 200 km / h.
Hybrid-electric drive copes with its task perfectly due to the abundance of torque, even at a speed of 160 km / h, the dynamics of acceleration fully justifies the price of the car.
Stability at speed at height, the trajectory sedan stands up well.
But that’s strange, the hybrid scheme does not save from high fuel consumption, 20 liters per 100 kilometers , it’s somehow not at all serious.
An old man at the training ground! The Mercedes C 180 that has seen it can still set records despite a run of 420,000 km and reduced tenacity during the brake service.
The consumption exam was passed perfectly by Mercedes 2008. 16.2 liters – a super figure for a nine-year-old sedan at a speed of 200 km / h. In this case, the on-board computer “hides” as much as three liters of fuel consumption, and the speedometer “eats” 5 km / h.
The car did not overheat during the run, the noise was subjectively low.
The polygon (runway 2.6 km long) was not sufficient to accelerate the minivan to the required speed. Mercedes V 250 d is relatively leisurely.
On the highway, he showed a fuel consumption of 21.5 liters of diesel. The speedometer at the same time demonstrates fairly accurate data, only 3 km / h of error.
Strikingly, compared to other competitors, the minivan is quite noisy, especially the unpleasant sound comes from the exterior mirrors.
Is also logical that even with a weak side wind, the wen does not feel so steady on the road.
Porsche 911 Turbo
The most athletic of the ten. Porsche 911 Turbo with its 580 hp can accelerate in 9.2 seconds to 200 km / h. For comparison, another sports car participating in this test (Spider Abarth) requires almost 30 seconds more time for overclocking.
Porsche is good not only in overclocking, but also in braking. This sport car is filigree able to drive at high speed.
But what is surprising is that the engine of the machine works very loudly, the steering is somewhat peculiarly transmitting feedback to the wheels.
However, the coupe is quite economical, 18.3 liters at a low 3.200 rpm in the last gear. Accuracy of the speedometer is six km / h.
At the wheel of the VW Golf TSI with a 1.5 liter engine you feel confident.
The main feature of the model is its environmental friendliness, does not change the credo Golf and at high speeds. The level of nitrogen oxides emitted into the atmosphere is small and at 200 km / h.
The four-cylinder engine burns an acceptable 14.6 liters per 100 kilometers of track.
And although the acceleration to the test speed takes about 48 seconds (almost forever), all the parameters of controllability are normal, braking is very even tolerable. Accuracy of the speedometer is 7 km / h. Noisiness is not exceeded.
Less consumption of gasoline than the Volkswagen Passat, in this test was not. At 100 kilometers, the Passat 2.0 TDI DSG consumes only 12.0 liters at a speed of 200 km / h – this is surprisingly small. Also in a big plus, you can write that it works at such a high speed is extremely quiet.
The engine at 3.250 rpm on the sixth gear does not bring to the natural background, the rustle of the wheels and the muffled noise of the wind outside the window, no unpleasant extraneous sounds.
From the experience of driving it can be said that the Passat is an ideal car for long trips, straight is a real devourer of kilometers.
Accuracy of the speedometer is present, but within reasonable limits.
And so, how modern are the cars adapted to drive 200 km / h? Conclusion: perfectly adapted! But the Passat is beyond competition.
